The Society of Canadian Ornithologists acknowledges that Canada was built on the traditional and contemporary homelands of Indigenous Peoples (First Nations, Inuit, Métis). Many Indigenous territories across Turtle Island are unceded and were taken forcibly or through deceit (i.e., stolen). Many territories that were ceded, typically via treaties, were meant to be shared and the relinquishing of Indigenous Peoples’ rights was not mutually agreed upon. In line with the principles of Truth and Reconciliation, it is incumbent upon all of us in Canada to educate ourselves about past injustices, ongoing injustices, and commit to forging good faith relationships based on mutual recognition of and respect for one another.
