Positions: Conservation Assistants (3) Type: full-time summer job Organization: The Couchiching Conservancy http://www.couchconservancy.ca Location: Orillia, Ontario The Couchiching Conservancy is a recognized member of the Ontario Land Trust Alliance and is a non-profit, non-government organization operating since 1993. During that time The Conservancy has protected 9,000 acres of environmentally significant lands in the Couchiching Region. Reporting relationship: The Conservation Assistant will report directly to the Stewardship Coordinator. This summer position is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable work experience that will help with the development of a career in the environmental field. Demonstrated knowledge in the following * Post secondary education in environmental science, wildlife ecology, environmental planning or related field of study, * Demonstrated environmental knowledge and understanding of ecological principles, including ecological management, and planning, * Excellent plant identification skills, familiarity with field monitoring techniques, * Familiarity with local forest, grassland and wetland communities and species, * Ability to identify species at risk and non-native, invasive species, * Ability to conduct early morning avian monitoring program for species at risk; * Experience with Ecological Land Classification, * Excellent time management, communication and interpersonal skills, * Ability to work independently and to take initiative on projects, * Ability to work outdoors and in adverse conditions, ability to work evenings and weekends, * Must have a valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle. Responsibilities * Under supervision, assist in the management of nature reserves, planning and delivering public education events, * Collection of biological field data for baseline documentation reports and annual monitoring reports, * Compilation of data, development and implementation of property management plans, * Promote and raise awareness of Conservancy activities and practices; * Assist the delivery of programs and projects for multiple species at risk and other ecological values on conservation lands, * Assist with the collection and analysis of field data on bird populations, species at risk and vegetation assessments, * Manage and expand the current database for landowners associated with reserve properties, * Provide staff support for special events, * Address other stewardship issues as required.
